Language Focus Index (B1)

The Language Focus Index shows how Perspicacity modules support core B1 language functions across themes.

Since we may want to plan lessons around language aims, not topics, this index helps to quickly identify which Perspicacity modules fit the language you are teaching.

How to use this index

Use the index to:

  • match Perspicacity modules to your current language focus
  • supplement coursebook units
  • plan speaking work across a term

Each module focuses on one main language function, with supporting grammar and vocabulary.

B1 Language Functions Covered

Perspicacity modules currently support the following B1 language areas:

  • speculating and hypothesising
  • making suggestions
  • giving reasons
  • describing past events and deductions
  • comparing and evaluating
  • expressing and defending opinions
  • agreeing and disagreeing politely

The primary focus throughout is spoken interaction.

Planning with Perspicacity

Perspicacity modules are designed to be:

  • flexible
  • short
  • easy to combine

You can:

  • choose a module to match a specific grammar point
  • use several modules to practise the same function in different contexts
  • return to the same language focus later in the year with a new theme

Is this a syllabus?

No.

Perspicacity does not replace a coursebook or syllabus.
It provides structured speaking opportunities that reinforce language students are already learning.

Teachers remain in control of:

  • pacing
  • sequencing
  • assessment

What’s next?

The Language Focus Index will grow as new themes are added.

Future themes will extend coverage to areas such as:

  • conditionals
  • reported speech
  • media literacy language
  • narrative and storytelling
